Short answer: This guide uses Google Photos: a cloud backup from your phone, then a download in a web browser on your Mac. It is not a USB transfer.12 Turn on backup in the Google Photos app on your phone and wait for Backup complete. Then, on your Mac, go to photos.google.com, select a photo and click More > Download.341

How this guide was made: SpecCairn did not move photos with a particular phone and Mac. The steps follow Google Photos Help; its computer steps are written for any computer, not for a Mac specifically.

Why this guide uses Google Photos

  • Google’s Android Help gives USB-cable steps for Windows computers and Chromebooks, but none for a Mac.2
  • Apple’s Image Capture guide names cameras, iPhone, iPad and scanners; it doesn’t name Android phones.5
  • So this guide follows the route Google documents for photos: back up to your Google Account, then download on the computer.21

Before you start

  • Backups use your Google Account storage, which is shared with Google Drive and Gmail. If it’s full, buy more storage or clean up space.6
  • You need a good internet connection. Google lists size limits: photos up to 200 MB or 200 MP, and videos up to 10 GB.6
  • Backed-up photos stay private unless you share them. You can back up to only one Google Account at a time.7

Step 1: back up on the phone

  1. Open the Google Photos app and sign in.3
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.3
  3. Tap Photos settings > Backup, then turn Backup on.3
  4. Wait until the status reads Backup complete. It can take a while, depending on your connection and how much you upload.43
  5. To back up a few items right away, touch and hold them, then tap Back up.4

Step 2: download on the Mac

  1. On the Mac, open a web browser, go to photos.google.com and sign in to the same Google Account.17
  2. Select a photo or video.1
  3. Click More > Download.1
  4. To download everything, follow Google’s instructions for exporting your Google Photos data.1

How to check it worked

Open the downloaded files on the Mac. Keep the originals on your phone until the copies open correctly.8

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
The status never says Backup completeCheck your internet connection and your Google storage; a backup can take a while.63
A downloaded video won’t playGoogle suggests a different browser, a codec extension or a different video player.9
File dates look wrongYour computer may give a downloaded file a new timestamp; the photo’s original details stay in its metadata.9
You’d rather use a cableThe cited Google and Apple pages don’t describe a USB route from an Android phone to a Mac. Check your phone maker’s support pages.258

FAQ

Does this remove the photos from my phone?

No. Backup copies them to your Google Account, and downloading makes a local copy on the computer.71

Can I use Image Capture on the Mac instead?

Apple’s guide lists cameras, iPhone, iPad and scanners and doesn’t name Android phones, so SpecCairn can’t confirm it works with yours.58
